DAY 5 - OAK TREE HILL TO RICHMOND
Day 5. Before we set off from Northallerton we bought pastries and sandwiches from a small bakery across the street for our lunch. We then started our hike in a light but steady drizzle through Danby Wiske, a few farmers fields, a wet bog or two, then onto Kiplin where we stopped at for tea and scones at the Kiplin Hall Tea Room (see pics). We walked mostly along roads to Bolton-on-Swale, then more or less followed the river Swale past Catterick Bridge. The rest of the afternoon was spent trying to navigate our way across farmers fields where the path was not clear. We lost the trail close to the end of the day and had to cross a barbed wire fence to get back on trail. Pete ended up with a few cuts to his hands, torn pants and scraped knees but we were prepared with our first aid kits and set up a MASH unit in the field. We arrived in the beautiful town of Richmond shortly after 4 and checked immediately into the bar at our accommodations for tonight, The King’s Head Inn. Dinner tonight was a very good Indian restaurant. Stats for today; 15.5 miles, 41,000 steps, very little elevation, one OSHA recordable injury.
As we walked through the small village of Kiplin we came upon Kiplin Hall (next 3 pics) We didn’t have time for a long visit but stayed for tea and fresh scones in their Tea Room.
